Do I need supplements?

I’m certain you don’t need a genie to tell you that good nutrition coupled with exercise is the foundation of good health. The body requires an excess of 30 key nutrients and vitamins to be at peak performance and function properly. Our current lifestyles may impact how we feed the body and this may result in some vitamin deficiencies. These insufficient nutrients may not directly result in any disease but they leave the body open to conditions that may result in some diseases.

Taking the right food supplements can fill the gap in deficiencies we feel we may have as a result of not eating properly. The connection between food supplements and direct health benefits is an area where researchers are constantly investigating.

Winifred Conkling et al argues that you may still not be consuming sufficient nutrients even after feeding on fruits, vegetables, and whole grains because of the processes involved from harvesting to dishing out a meal. Food cultivating, processing, storage and even cooking are all processes that may impact the nutritional levels in the final products that we consume. On top of this, the body may also decide not to process and absorb all the nutrients consumed because of things like emotional and physical stress.

Aging also plays another role when it comes to supplements for the body. As we grow, the body requires more nutrients but in contrast, the “processing power” of the body also decreases with age. Some inevitable changes occur to the body as we age, we lose muscles, skin gets thinner and we tend to have less stomach acid. For example, the way nutrients such as high vitamin B12 and Iron are absorbed by the body can be impacted by low stomach acid. Fortunately, in addition to healthy eating, supplements can help meet such nutrient needs.

Why we need supplements

Supplementation is key for the body to function properly. Eating a healthy diet can provide the right nutrients that the body requires but if you find yourself in a position where your lifestyle doesn’t allow for healthy eating then taking food supplements will be a great alternative. While we can’t stop some natural processes such as aging and energy utilization, we can definitely take actions that ensure that we have the right vitamins and nutrients to allow the body function.
