Hyaluronic acid can be described as a natural sugar that is important for the body to function properly. It can also be defined as a carbohydrate, chemically classified as a glycosaminoglycan (GAG) that occurs naturally throughout the human body in the connective tissues, epithelial and neural tissues. The majority of the hyaluronic acid in the body is found in the skin and the rest found in areas like the muscles and the skeleton. The main role of hyaluronic acid is to provide volume and pliability to the skin and it’s also very important when it comes to cell growth.

Hyaluronic acid plays a role in healing the skin and preserving hydration, it is, however, important to note that its high molecular weight does not allow direct penetration through the outermost layer of the skin.

 

Hyaluronic acid and the Skin

The skin consists of three main layers; the epidermis, dermis and the subcutis. The Epidermis is the outermost layer of the skin, the dermis is made up of complex fibrous matrix (collagen and elastin) in which blood vessels, nerves, etc are embedded. Collagen enables the skin to have its tensile strength while elastin maintains normal skin tension. This layer is also the site of the primary water retention molecule, hyaluronic acid (HA), which is located inside the collagen fibers network. The final layer which is the subcutis is predominantly made up of adipocytes.

As we age, we are faced with some challenges that affect the skin and some of these can be dealt with either through cosmetic surgery or some other methods. Some of the skin problems we are faced with as a result of aging include;

Hyaluronic acid filler typically lasts between 8 to 16 months in the skin depending on the age, type of skin, muscle activity of the underlying tissue and the depth of the injections.

 

Sources of hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid is known to be abundant in animals. For example, the combs of roosters have very high concentrations of hyaluronic acid. Since hyaluronic acid has the same chemical composition in all animals, this rooster-derived version poses no hazard of triggering an allergic reaction, and hence no skin testing is required. Other food sources of hyaluronic acid include; bone broth, starchy-root vegetables, citrus fruits, and leafy greens.
