Hyaluronic acid can be described as a natural sugar that is important for the body to function properly. It can also be defined as a carbohydrate, chemically classified as a glycosaminoglycan (GAG) that occurs naturally throughout the human body in the connective tissues, epithelial and neural tissues. The majority of the hyaluronic acid in the body is found in the skin and the rest found in areas like the muscles and the skeleton. Hyaluronic acid and the Skin
The skin consists of three main layers; the epidermis, dermis and the subcutis. The Epidermis is the outermost layer of the skin, the dermis is made up of complex fibrous matrix (collagen and elastin) in which blood vessels, nerves, etc are embedded. Collagen enables the skin to have its tensile strength while elastin maintains normal skin tension. This layer is also the site of the primary water retention molecule, hyaluronic acid (HA), which is located inside the collagen fibers network. The final layer which is the subcutis is predominantly made up of adipocytes.
